London NoBorders: history

The following is a brief history of London NoBorders:

2005

People involved in the April 2nd organising committee from the 2004 European Social Forum and the Make Borders History protest at the G8 in Scotland come together to form London No Borders. The group begins by focusing mainly on anti-deportation campaigns and supporting undocumented workers. Late in the year there are several pickets outside Communications House reporting centre in Old Street.

2006

JANUARY: Vigil outside Harmondsworth immigration prison near Heathrow following the suicide of detainee Bereket Yohannes. Details here.

MARCH: Group hosts the first UK No Borders Network gathering at The Square, a squatted social centre in Holborn.

APRIL: Protest at Colnbrook/Harmondsworth immigration prison near Heathrow, with about 300 people from across the UK. Following the protest some of the detainees go on hunger strike, the group works supporting the detainees.

JUNE: Demo outside the News of the World, following a hoax by the paper when they lured undocumented workers onto a coach with the promise of work, and then took them straight to Harmondsworth.

OCTOBER: "March for Migrants Rights" demo on October 7th, several hundred people march across South London. Out of this march comes the "Papers for All" campaign which later becomes CAIC (Campaign for Immigration Controls).

FEBRUARY: Organised demo outside Harmondsworth/Colnbrook.

APRIL: Co-organised protest in Crawley against the building of a new detention centre at nearby Gatwick.

SEPTEMBER: Involved in the organisation of a "No Border" camp near Gatwick, a protest against the construction of a new detention prison there (Brook House). Several hundred people attend the camp including activists from mainland Europe.

2008

FEBRUARY: Conclusion of the trial of the "Harmondsworth 4", four people who were charged with causing disturbances at Harmondsworth immigration prison in November 2008. The group was part of the "Harmondworth 4" campaign supporting the accused. All 4 were acquitted of the main charges against them.

JUNE: Group organises a "radical history" evening discussing history of resistance in detention.

JULY: London Fete Against the G8. Protest at the Home Office in Croydon to coincide with the G8 in Japan.

MARCH: March from Bedford to Yarls Wood immigration prison attended by several hundred people.

JULY: Activists from the group help organise the NoBorder camp in Calais.

APRIL: Activists from the group disrupt the "Policing the Borders" conference in central London.
