Tomorrow there's a national demonstration about Climate Change happening in London. No Borders London have produced the following leaflet for the march:

The Global System that Fuels Climate also Drives Mass Migration

In the coming years millions of people will be forced to move to survive drought, famine, floods and wars over increasingly scarce resources. But while those with money and power currently remain safe, it is the marginalized and oppressed who are the most vulnerable to the climatic, economic and political effects of global warming. Climate change graphically highlights how immigration controls enforce the global division of labour and denies human rights and resources for the many, in order to ensure profit for the few.

As the numbers of those forced to move increase, so do the efforts to keep them imprisoned. Border controls are being strengthened and militarised in response to the promise of unprecedented numbers of people displaced because of climate change. Deaths at the hand of border controls are already increasing – each year thousands of migrants are shot on the US-Mexican border, perish in the deserts of North Africa, or drown in the Atlantic.

State driven market solutions, such as carbon trading, will never be the solution to climate change since they continue to serve the interests of corporations and capital. They mean business as usual, now clothed in phoney environmentalism. Climate Change is a planet wide problem; it requires a transnational movement which addresses political, social and economic equity.

People must be able to move to secure their own survival. And people’s survival must be protected from the effects of climate chaos. Together we must challenge the power of states and corporations to control the movement of people and to wreck the planet
