Around 200 people took part in the demonstration outside Harmondsworth and Colnbrook detention centres last Saturday 10th February. The protest called by No Borders London was a colourful event with samba bands and lots of banners. We were joined by No Borders supporters from Leeds, Nottingham and elsewhere. Former detainees and asylum seekers from Zimbabwe, Congo, Burundi, Iraq and other parts of the world spoke of their experiences, and a message from current detainees was relayed to the rally via telephone. The local MP, John McDonnell, also spoke, one of the few MPs who has publically opposed the detention regime.
At the end of the rally people marched in the main road back to where the coaches were parked. There was some pushing and shoving by the police, but no arrests.
