Refugee Week - Celebrating Sanctuary

Lots of events going on in London and elsewhere over the next seven days as part of Refugee Week, notably the Celebrating Sanctuary free festival tomorrow, Sunday 17 June, 2-7pm, at
Bernie Spain Gardens, Upper Ground, South Bank, London, SE1 (adjacent to Oxo Tower Wharf). The publicity states:

'In music there are no borders. When you have no borders, you have no refugees.’

Celebrating Sanctuary is an extraordinary event which gathers together established and emerging refugee musicians, dancers and artists to celebrate the positive cultural contribution of refugees to the UK.

Now in its 8th year, Celebrating Sanctuary demonstrates that such a vibrant panorama of sight, sound, aroma and taste would not exist had it not been for the UK’s hard won tradition of providing sanctuary to those fleeing persecution from many parts of the globe.

Highlights of this years festival include Somalia’s powerful and dynamic female vocalist Maryam Mursal, Palestinian Hip-Hop group Dam and also The Destroyers, a Balkan band with their take on traditional arrangements from Eastern Europe.
