On November 29th a law to limit immigration, punish people for having relationships outside of the EU and further link language and immigration controls, will come into effect. Spouses and partners, from outside of the European Economic Area, applying to come to Britain, will have to pass an English language test before they come to the UK. The government estimate that this will lead to a 10% reduction of people coming on the spousal visa. The new requirement will be debated again next Monday in the House of Lords.

No to Larne immigration detention centre (NI)

PRESS RELEASE - Refugee Action Group

The Refugee Action Group has stepped up its campaign against the opening of the immigration detention centre in Larne as the Home Office UK Border Agency presses ahead with plans for the centre. The Larne Borough Council meets on Friday to make a final planning decision on the centre. This would be the first such centre in Northern Ireland, possibly housing 22 detainees at any one time. The Group notes that in 2008, the Council of Europe urged the UK government “to consider the possibility of drastically limiting migrants’ administrative detention”. Despite this and the considerable recent cuts to the Home Office budget, the UK Border Agency appears intent on the very costly exercise of building an immigrant detention facility in Larne.

Updates from Calais ( 24 October 2010)

Africa House is being slowly demolished on the heads of the occupiers…

24th October – summary of the past week and a half: The CRS have been gone from Calais for a few days, due to the general strike, protests and riots and 50 cops in hospital across various locations in France…

Instead, the PAF have been extraordinarily busy harassing migrants in their camps and squats, in the streets and on their way to England; a large number of injuries have been sustained by migrants such as bruises, cuts – often requiring stitches – broken fingers, damaged knees, dislocated wrists and ankles — the usual. One man had the skin of the palms of his hands peeled off after being dragged down a lorry by port security.

Institute of Race Relations publishes report on migrant deaths

The Institute of Race Relations (IRR) has published a report on deaths of asylum seekers and migrants which damns government policies for putting vulnerable people at risk.

According to IRR's report, "Driven to Desperate Measures: 2006-2010", forty-four people have died since 2006 as a consequence of the iniquities of the immigration/asylum system. Another seven died at the hand of racists on our streets.
