Press Release: AUTONOMOUS SPACE FOR MIGRANTS AND ACTIVISTS OPENS IN CALAIS

Activists from the transnational No Borders network and the French
organisation, SôS Soutien aux Sans Papiers, have opened a large warehouse for migrants in Calais[1].

The building is to be an autonomous space for migrants and activists struggling for the right to freedom of movement. It will be host to information-sharing, debate and practical solidarity. The Kronstadt building is located in the town that has become the symbol of Fortress Europe, a place where police arrests and beatings of migrants are a daily occurrence, and where night-time pursuits are relentless[2].

IMMIGRATION CENTRE PLANNING PERMISSION REFUSED

Last night Crawley Borough Council Development Control Committee rejected by 14 votes to 1 the planning application by Arora International Hotels Ltd. for permission to convert the 254 bed Mercure Hotel in Povey Cross Road, Crawley into an immigration detention centre.

Arora detention plans defeated!

The "Aurora Campaign" was a campaign by various NoBorders groups against the plans of the Aurora Hotel Group to turn their four star hotel at Gatwick into a detention centre.

On Monday 25th January 2010 Arora's planning application was defeated by 14 votes to 1 at Crawley Council's Planning Meeting, and the Hotel Group dropped their plans.

No Border activists held a demo outside Crawley Town Hall before the meeting and a number went into the meeting.

While the migration regime is fortifying itself and setting up rings of defence around European wealth, inner control is tightening to keep public order, at a time where the nation state already seems to be a dead corpse. Solidarity with resistance in detention - network meeting

A few years ago, people from No Borders, Crossroads Women's Centre, FRFI and others came together to form a network aimed at responding to resistance inside immigration detention centres around London (hunger strikes etc) by organising quick-response protests outside.

Last June, the network organised a protest outside Serco's offices in Holborn in solidarity with the protests happening inside Yarls Wood at the time.

Since then however the network has been dormant.
