SOS Freedom

This week has seen a major uprising at Harmondsworth detention centre near London's Heathrow airport. Harmondsworth is the biggest such centre the UK, with space for 550 detainees. A report by the chief inspector of prisons this week strongly criticised conditions in the centre, describing it as the "poorest report ever" on any UK immigration removal centre (full report here http://inspectorates.homeoffice.gov.uk/hmiprisons/inspect_reports/irc-in... ).

Harmondsworth Solidarity Action

70+ people joined a No Borders London demonstration this afternoon outside the London offices of Kalyx, the private company that runs Harmondsworth Detention Centre. The action was in solidarity with this week's uprising by detainees at Harmondsworth. It featured a lively contingent from Justice for Cleaners, making explicit the link between the detention and deportation of migrants and the exploitation of migrant workers in low paid, dirty and dangerous jobs.

World AIDS Day

December 1, 2006

Today is World AIDS Day. Internationally migrants are disproportionately affected by HIV and AIDS, as agencies such as UNESCO and AVERT have recognised.

Migrants in all parts of the world are subject to marginalisation and discrimination, creating conditions of life that make them more vulnerable to HIV infection and less likely to receive medical treatment once infected.

Migration Summit in Tripoli

November 25, 2006

50 EU and African States met for a two day conference on migration and development in Tripoli from 22 to 23 November 2006

Their host Muammar Gaddafi, of the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, opened the conference by telling the assembled ministers that the world should not try to restrict international migration because it is 'inevitable' and commanded by God (see BBC report http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/em/fr/-/1/hi/world/africa/6176720.stm)

Misjudging Rape

Next week sees the launch of 'Misjudging Rape', a dossier of how adjudicators (now known as immigration judges) flout international law and even their own guidelines when they consider the asylum claims of women and girls seeking safety and protection from rape.
