Harmondsworth demonstrations

December 12, 2006

There have been several more actions in support of Harmondsworth detainees, following their recent revolt.

No Borders London joined 80 demonstrators protesting outside Harmondsworth and Colnbrook Immigration Removal Centres on Sunday the 3rd December 2006 (picture above; report here).

Three days later, 25 people joined another solidarity demo at Communications House in London, called by London Fight Racism Fight Imperialism (report here).

Whatever the merits of Tony Blair's recent retrospective apology for Britain's leading role in the slave trade it would be less hypocritical if his government was not developing a modern system of slavery and the reintroduction of sweated labour through the reshaping of immigration controls.

Remembering Sergey Barnanyuk

An article by Harmit Athwal at the Institute for Race Relations website reports on the inquest into the death of Sergey Barnanyuk at Harmondsworth detention centre in July 2004. Barnayuk, a construction worker and father from the Ukraine, apparently took his life having been been abandoned in legal limbo in the removal centre system. His death sparked an uprising by other detainees.

Cleaners recognised

In the latest round of the Justice for Cleaners campaign, Cleaning company Lancaster have agreed to recognise the Transport & General Workers Union in the face of threatened protests. The company signed up just days before cleaners were due to begin a fast - now cancelled - in the City of London (see statement below):

Strangers into Citizens

The East London Communities Organisation (TELCO) has launched Strangers into Citizens, a campaign for regularisation of migrants living in the UK. TELCO is an alliance of 35 faith groups, schools, student organisations, union branches and charities across 5 East London boroughs. The campaign has also been endorsed by South London Citizens and is being considered for a national campaign by the CITIZENS network, under the umbrella of The Citizen Organising Foundation.

Inside and Outside the Camp: Resistance Continues
Statement by London No Borders on the protests at UK Detention Centres

The protests at Harmondsworth Detention Centre and the hunger strike at Yarls Wood Detention Centre have been the latest attempts by detainees to contest their abhorrent treatment at the hands of the UK immigration system. In Yarls Wood Detention Centre, 25 mothers have begun a hunger strike today in protest at their treatment there.

A quick reminder - there is a demonstration at Harmondsworth tomorrow from 12 - 2 pm (on the Colnbrook bypass by Heathrow airport). A coach is leaving from University of London Union, Malet Street, WC1 at 10.30 am.
