Institute of Race Relations publishes report on migrant deaths

The Institute of Race Relations (IRR) has published a report on deaths of asylum seekers and migrants which damns government policies for putting vulnerable people at risk.

According to IRR's report, "Driven to Desperate Measures: 2006-2010", forty-four people have died since 2006 as a consequence of the iniquities of the immigration/asylum system. Another seven died at the hand of racists on our streets.

PRESS RELEASE: Death of Angolan man following violent deportation attempt

London NoBorders condemns in the strongest terms the violence that led to the death of Jimmy Mubenga following an attempt to deport him to Angola earlier this week.(1)

On Tuesday evening 46 year old Jimmy was put on BA flight 77 from Heathrow to Luanda. He was accompanied by three security guards from G4S who according to eyewitnesses violently assualted him. An ambulance was called to the airport and Jimmy was taken to Hillingdon Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. (2)

Man dies after deportation attempt on BA flight to Angola, 12/10/10

On Tuesday 12th October a 46 year old Angolan man died upon arrival at Hillingdon hospital where he had been taken by ambulance from Heathrow airport. He was being deported by 3 private security guards on a BA Flight 77 to Luanda when he fell ill. A post mortem is underway.

Iraqis assaulted on mass deportation flight to Baghdad 07/09/10

Press release from the International Federation of Iraqi Refugees, 9/9/10:

Iraqi refugees have were assaulted by British security guards contracted by the UK Border Agency and Iraqi police on the mass deportation flight that left London for Baghdad on Monday night carrying more than sixty people.

The International Federation of Iraqi Refugees has seen photographs of the injuries inflicted and will be making a formal complaint to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

Demonstration against evictions of Roma, French Embassy, 04/09/10

The Irish Traveller Movement in Britain is calling for a demo at 1pm on Saturday 4th September outside the French Embassy (58 Knightsbridge) against the recent policies of the French Government, which have resulted in families with children as young as 2 weeks old being evicted with less than 30 minutes notice to gather their things and left homeless on the streets of France. Others have been packed onto planes with no choice and sent back to their home countries. Some of the Roma have lived in France all their lives.

Lufthansa-owned British Midland International (BMI) plans charter deportation to Afghanistan

According to information received in the last few days, Nottinghamshire-based British Midland International (BMI), owned since last year by the German airline Lufthansa, is planning a deportation charter flight to Kabul, Afghanistan, this Tuesday 15th June.

In the last few months BMI have taken part in deportations to Sudan, Ethiopia and Iran.
