Freedom not Frontex: There cannot be democracy without global freedom of movement

[The following text was written 08/03/11 by afrique-europe-interact, welcome to europe and the network of critical migration and border regime research]

The dynamic of the Arab spring is emanating into the entire world. The movements of revolt in the Maghreb encourage and give hope, not only because despotic regimes that have been believed invincible were chased away. Although the direction of further developments remain open it is obvious that the domino effect of the Tunisian jasmine revolution swiftly brought back the old insight that history is driven from below. The struggles are directed against the day-to-day poverty as well as against general oppression, they are as much about better living conditions as they are about dignity, in short: "bread and roses".

The incredible days of Midan Al-Tahrir, the Liberation Square in Cairo signify the quest for new forms of self organisation and grassroots democracy. The desire for equal rights, autonomy and a share of the economic wealth is also mirrored in the boats crossing the Mediterranean towards Europe: today casting off from Tunisia while during the last years from North and West Africa . "Exit" – to claim one's freedom of movement and to migrate in order to find a different, better life, and "Voice" – to raise one's voice and struggle locally, are not contradictory, they are rather mutually intertwined.

Statement of solidarity to the 300 hunger strikers in Greece

To the hunger strikers:

London NoBorders support your struggle and demand that the Greek government gives you legal status immediately. You are amongst hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrant workers that are being exploited in Europe because of your immigration status and we are in solidarity with all struggles for the right to live and work in dignity. We believe in freedom of movement and the right to stay and call for an end to all border controls.

Contact Mid Sussex Council - say no to detention!

As part of Brighton and London No Borders' campaign against the latest attempt to build a detention centre in the Crawley area, we are asking anyone concerned with the ongoing detention of children to join an email campaign against the proposed 'pre-departure accommodation' planned for Pease Pottage in Sussex.

If we can persuade the Mid Sussex District Council District Planning Committee that this Home Office proposed operation can in anyway be considered to be a secure facility, reneging on the Coalition's promise to end the "detention of children for immigration purposes", we can stop this glorified PR exercise and force the government to truly end this barbaric practice.

Please encourage the wide distribution of this statement, draft email and lists of the planning committee members and all 54 Mid Sussex District Councillors. And get emailing people! The more they all hear about this the better. If a mass email campaign help work in thwarting the forestry sell-off, then it can certainly help end the locking up of children for the mere convenience of the Home Office and UK Border Agency.

NB The current date for the planning meeting to consider the application is 17 March, so please hurry!

Pease Pottage - What's happened so far

At the end of January 2011 London NoBorders received information that the hotel company Arora International [1] has started a second attempt to make money from the Home Office's deportation business. The company plans to use the site of a residential school for children with behavioural and learning difficulties in Pease Pottage, Crawley, Sussex owned by the Arora Group subsidiary "The Crossroads Childrens (sic) Education Services Ltd.", into an immigration detention facility.

This is a summary of what happened so far:
