Forced returns to DR Congo

Since the British courts rejected a recent Country Guidance case that presented a wealth of evidence that asylum seekers forcibly returned to the Democratic Republic of Congo risk being persecuted by the authorities, the Home Office has stepped up its attempts to deport people to that country.

Vampires and Racism - A talk and film screening @ Rampart Cafe Night, Thursday February 26th, 15 -17 Rampart Street, London E1 2LA

Undead creatures who return from the dead have been part of legends for more then 2000 years. However, some aspects of the vampire legends which are part of our popular culture actually appeared only in the last 150 years. This talk gives an introduction into the historical context of the emerging racist theories in the second half of the 19th century and the development of the modern Dracula legend between the 1850s and 1920s.

New immigration prison to open at Gatwick this spring

The new immigration detention centre at Gatwick airport will not be opened until the spring, Corporate Watch has learned. The official opening had been scheduled for February this year but has been delayed for undisclosed reasons. The purpose-built high-security prison, named Brook House, is based on the 'successful' design of Colnbrook detention centre at Heathrow airport. The new detention centre will be run by Global Solution Ltd (GSL), which is now owned by G4S, and will hold up to 426 male and female detainees.

Italy: Mass escapes and protests in Lampedusa

Nearly 2000 persons were crammed in a centre that can barely contain 850, after a series of arrivals of boats from the African coast. People were locked behind gates and many were sleeping out in the rain because of overcrowding. The Interior Minister Maroni refused to move them to other structures operating in Italy, insisting they must be processed and eventually deported directly from Lampedusa, the small island south of Sicily that is the first point of arrival for many migrants, especially since increased immigration controls at the Spansh border have changed the migration routes.
